Monumenta Historica Societatis Iesu

This collection presents critical editions in the original languages of primary source documents related to the origin and expansion of the Jesuit Order. Many of the edited documents are preserved in the Roman Archives of the Society of Jesus (ARSI). The 156 volumes of the Monumenta Historica are the result of the work of several generations of Jesuit historians engaged in textual and historical research. Besides providing a unique collection of published sources, divided geographically and chronologically, they are an example of the Institute’s commitment to methodological clarity, intellectual independence, and scholarly excellence. The Institute is launching a new series of the Monumenta in 2005 with a first volume of letters concerning the old Jesuit province of Paraguay. The new series represents the same commitment to scholarship that has characterized the prevous work. The volumes are based on updated editorial principles and present new criteria for the selection of sources.
